My favorite project: The Internet of things in real life
When my former boss at JBoss, Marc Fleury, first described his new project OpenRemote to me, I couldn't think of anything I was less interested in. It had nothing to do with the enterprise or Web-scale space -- that is, serving the needs of large companies with money -- and seemed more about paving the way for the new millionaires at JBoss to enjoy the same kinds of luxury as Bill Gates. I kind of changed the subject, ate more steak (Marc is a great cook), and instead talked about my idea, which later crashed and burned.

Nexus 7 3G back in stock on UK Google Play Store
It didn't sell out quite as quickly as Nexus 4 and 10, but the 3G/HSPA version of the Nexus 7 was nevertheless unavailable from the UK Google Play Store shortly after it went on sale. Now the tablet's back on sale, and the Play Store listing indicates a standard 3-5 day shipping window for the device.
The 3G Nexus 7 sells for £239 in the UK, and comes with 32GB of storage. The two Wifi-only Nexus 7's are still available to buy from the British Google Play Store too, priced at £159 and £199 for 16 and 32GB storage options respectively. The Nexus 4 remains sold out in the UK Play Store for the time being, though it is available elsewhere. Meanwhile the Nexus 10 is listed with a 2-3 week shipping timeframe.
If anyone's already picked up a 3G Nexus 7 over the past couple of weeks, let us know how you're getting on down in the comments.

What's Behind the eBay-Intuit Anti-Compete Agreement?
Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against eBay for a non-competition agreement it had signed with Intuit. The agreement prevents either company from trying to hire someone from the other's staff. According to the Associated Press, the federal suit says Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay (now CEO at HP) and Scott Cook, Intuit founder, were involved in forming and enforcing the agreement. It was in place from 2006 to 2009.
Intuit was not named in the lawsuit because it had already been listed in a suit and settlement from September 2010 over a series of similar agreements with other companies (Apple, Adobe, Google, Intel and Pixar) not to hire each other's employees. The current eBay case grew from the 2010 one, but is being treated as a separate suit.
Competition Doesn't Hurt, But Limiting Opportunity Does
Tech companies are in constant competition when trying to find qualified people to work for them. Acting Assistant Attorney General Joseph Waylan said in the DOJ's press release that the department believes eBay violated antitrust laws by entering into this agreement because it "eliminated a significant form of competition to the detriment of affected employees who were likely deprived of access to better job opportunities and salaries."
By preventing Intuit, or any competitor, from trying to hire their employees, eBay is trying to limit the options for its employees and thus reduce their leverage. This means employees might not be able to negotiate raises or better benefits because there are fewer places for them to go if their requests aren't met.
Bad Practice, Good Business?
These agreements are illegal, and clearly hurt employees. But it's easy to understand why companies are tempted. After all, in most states, companies are allowed to develop these kinds of agreements directly with their employees, if not with other companies. They see this as a way of protecting an investment. Employers put a lot of money into training employees, not to mention the access given to confidential information and relationships. Non-compete agreements help prevent that investment from benefiting a competitor.
In California, non-compete contracts between employers and employees is prohibited, except in limited circumstances. That could be one reason for companies to make anti-competitive deals with others in their industry. California State Attorney General Kamala Harris is filing a State lawsuit - separate from the federal one - based on the State's stronger protection against anti-competitive agreements.

Letterpress for iPhone and iPad updates with Rematch and more
The highly addicting word game Letterpress by atebits has received an excellent update, today, that address a few of our gripes, the main one being the inability to start a rematch after a game ends. With Letterpress 1.1, now you can!
One of the other biggest additions to Letterpress 1.1 is that now you can send Game Center friend requests directly from the app. There is also an option to turn off the sounds, more words in the dictionary, and better handling of those annoying server errors.
I don't normally include all the release notes when announcing an update to an app, but atebits has made these ones so fun, that I can't help myself. I love it when developers act human and make their notes and descriptions fun.
- Rematch! (requires iOS 6 or newer)
- Option to silence sounds. FYI I worked really hard on those sounds. No, no, go ahead, turn off the sounds if you want.
- Added words to the dictionary (and removed a few goofs).
- Fixed "Tell a Friend" via Facebook. People use Facebook?
- Clearer instructions. Yes, days of the week are proper nouns. No, they are not allowed.
- Handle servers errors a bit better. CROSS YOUR FINGERS THAT'S SOME GNARLY CODE.
- Less bugs! Not that I'm saying there were any bugs before. But there are definitely fewer now.
- Fixed syncing deleted games across devices.
- Tiles are now tappier when you tap tiles fast. Tap tappity tap tap.
- I like cookies.
- Send Game Center friend requests right from the app! Holy moly! So cool! Friend your friends with the friendlier friender!
- In-app purchases are less forgetful.
- Does anybody read these? Helloooooo?
Now wasn't that fun?
So what do you think of the new update? Are you excited for Rematch and in-app Game Center requests? If you don't yet play Letterpress, what are you waiting for? Share your Game Center ID in the comments below and start challenging each other!
